I was working on a condominium as an electrician. There was a crew of about 20. We had 2 foreman and 1 general foreman. The work was easy, residential type installation. However, I was catching several mistakes and the foreman was young and inexperienced.
In helping them I would politely point out the mistakes that needed to be corrected before it cost a lot of money to correct every condo unit. Instead of welcoming my advice, the foreman started to become annoyed so eventually I stopped saying anything and that cost them because there was some rework.
One of the foreman had a bad attitude. He had a big ego and enjoyed throwing his weight around. One day he handed me an envelope and said, "nice workin' with ya'." But of course it had nothing to do with a lay off. He kept up the harassment and it was really upsetting me. The other foreman started into me as well.
After about six months of this I finally saw some relief. I was walking down to my car and I had a walking vision of one of the foreman receiving his last check and being sent home, laid off. I could see him feeling very hurt and depressed sitting in his car.
Two weeks later, he was laid off. I also heard he was very depressed and drinking a lot because his mother had died 9 months earlier. Just because he was so miserable with his life didn't mean he should project that misery on everyone else.
Unfortunately, I had a feeling that these foreman convinced the shop that I was a troublemaker and when the economy started to slow I was one of the first to be laid off.
