It was my freshman year in high school. My mom, aunt, cousin and I were headed out of town. It was supposed to be a 2 hour trip but it had snowed the night before. We woke up an hour early and drove slow as to avoid any accident. We were about 20 minutes out of the city limits and we slowed down behind a snowplow. I was sitting behind my aunt who was in the driver's seat. She got tired of following it very quickly and decided to pass it. She pulled out of four wheel drive and that's when it happened.
The car hit a patch of black ice and started to skid. I braced myself against the roof of the SUV with my left hand and grabbed onto something with my right. I closed my eyes and had just enough time to think "I must look stupid. If anyone says anything I'll just say I was stretching." (I know silly last thought but it's the truth). I passed out and suddenly I was floating above the car. I saw the front two wheels go off the road then blackness.
I woke up to my cousin screaming in my ear and upside down, dangling from my seatbelt. Well, not dangling. My neck was bent and my shoulders were touching the roof. I remember my mother asking if I was alright and trying to find a way to get down from the seat belt. I put my head flat on the roof and pushed myself up and clicked the seatbelt. I landed on my knees. My cousin was still screaming. I calmed her down and got her out of her seatbelt. My mom and aunt crawled out of the front passenger window and my cousin and I crawled out of the back passenger window.
When we arrived at the hospital I told my story to the doctor and police officer that came to get the details. The doctor told us that we were all lucky to be alive. We were supposed to be bedridden for about a week. However I was able to walk around and take care of my mother who was hurt.
I still don't know what happened to make me float above the accident but I believe that it saved my life. Though I still have problems with my back and have deteriorating disks in my neck I'm glad to be alive.
