I'm 22 years old and I have been having déjà vu from my dreams for as long as I can remember. It occurs on a weekly basis, if not daily. Its never be anything big or important, just little things, like a conversation with one of my friends or a doodle I see on someone's paper in class. The time between the dream and the déjà vu has been anywhere from 5+ years to 2 days before hand. I don't know if its any special ability or not, but it also isn't the only one I think I may have.
Again, as long as I can remember I have always been able to read someone's personality and have a sense of whether they are a good person or not within minutes of meeting them.
Also, it has been pointed out to me many times by many different people my strong connection with animals. My family has always found it odd and amusing how I could go up to a feral cat and pick it up and love on it like it was a big fat house cat, or the first time meeting my late stepfather's guard dog, who would try to attack anyone that came near him, I was able to get him to lay on his back and rub his belly within 5 minutes.
About 5 years ago I started seeing shadow people, I don't know if that's due to any ability or if they just like to show up around me.
Also, I have always known when something bad was going to happen to someone I care about, my mom and great grandma have always been able to as well.
When I was about 5 years old I was staying at my great grandma's house until my mom could pick me up when she got off of work. I just randomly started crying and my great grandma asked me what was wrong, I told her that my mom had just been in a car accident and 5 minutes after I told her what was wrong my mom called and said she was going to be late because someone had ran a red light and hit her in an intersection.
Fast forward 6 years, My mom was going to AA meetings to support a friend of hers and she generally took me along to keep an eye on me and make sure I did my homework. One night I continually begged her not to go to the meeting, and when she asked me why I told her that there was going to be a very bad man there, but of course she didn't listen to me. She ended up in a relationship with the bad man. He was a drug addict and was physically and mentally abusive to both of us and threatened to kill my mother and I on more than one occasion and went so far as to hire someone to kill us both. Fortunately for me and my mom, the guy the bad man paid to kill us ended up protecting us from the bad man. There have been quite a few more instances where I knew something bad was going to happen, but I couldn't quite pin point what.
I think I may have some abilities but I'm not really sure, so I'm wondering what other people's, who have more knowledge of the subject, think of my prospective abilities, what they are, and if I have them, how to develop them.

Sometimes a screen name says much more than the story itself.
What I think you have going on here is a mixture of things. Some of them purely natural (though they MAY seem Para-natural) and others not so much.
Animals are very perceptive (I am not talking "supernatural", I am talking animal behavior here) and can sense the intent of humans rather well. I knew of a Massif that was ill treated, and only fed on fresh, raw meat provided by his owner (Real Jerk HE was) and "played" with a bat across the back so frequently that the poor dog thought to "play" was to rip something literally to shreds. As luck would have it, a small group of very young children were walking by and the dog lunged. Thank Creator she was on a log chain and did not break it. The children all scattered save for one little boy. He walked right up to the fence, and stuck his hand in as adults from ALL directions came running and shouting.
That Massif actually sat back on her haunches, whined a bit and "nudged" her nose up to the tiny hand.
She did nothing.
That little boy grew up to be what the world would think was nothing "spectacular" save for a really good lawyer. The dog just KNEW he would not hurt her.
The connection that you had with your Mother at the age of five, is really a "love connection". There are many people who have this ability with ones they love.
Reading someones personality, or their "bad" or goodness is really more in INTUITION than Empathy.
Empathy is the ability to FEEL as someone else does, while at the same time possessing YOUR OWN. It does NOT mean that you ONLY "carry" theirs. YOURS are still present, they are just a bit repressed as you experience the flashes of Empathy.
I can not really touch on your déjà vu, as the examples you gave could very well have been "lead" by preexisting situations. Seeing someone ELSE doodle much the same thing before your dream, and not recalling it would be an example of that. So, I can not really say.
I apologise for the length of this post, but much of this, COULD be mainly a very intuitive nature.
