This happened to me when I was nine years old. Our family was invited to a swimming party. I didn't know how to swim. I was holding on to the edge of the pool as I made my way around the pool. The pool was deeper in the middle, and had a sharp drop off. I lost my footing and slipped into the deep end.
I was in a state of panic, and thrashing around trying to get back to the side of the pool. I was thinking why isn't anyone trying to save me? I tried to hold my breath as long as I could. When I couldn't hold it any longer I took a deep breath and in came the water. A peace came over me. No more pain or panic.
When they say that you see your life flash before you, it's true! It was like I was watching a movie reel on fast forward. Everything that I did, or said, or thought was on that movie reel.
I floated above my body. I could see myself going down in the water. My younger brother Mike was sitting on the latter to the pool. He was saying to my Mom "Mom, Shawn's drowning". My Mom said, "Oh she's just playing". My brother again told her "MOM, SHAWN'S DROWNING!"
My Mom had been sitting with her friends talking. She got up and screamed "OH MY GOD". She jumped over my brother and got in the pool and grabbed me. At that moment I slammed back into my body! My Mom had me on my stomach and was pushing on my back. I can remember all this water coming out of me. It seemed like gallons. I was crying, and telling her to "Take me to the hospital because I had drowned and was dead!"
She told me that "I was going to be okay". I asked her why she didn't listen to Mike when he told her that I was drowning? She asked me what I was talking about? I told her that "I saw her laughing and talking when Mike told her. She asked me how. I told her that, "I was dead, and floating above!" She never questioned me about that again.
After that she make all of us kids take swimming lessons.
