The Man With The Top Hat

Hi, I have also had an experience with this. When I was 8 years old my Mum asked me to go upstairs to get my new baby brother a clean vest out of the chest of drawers on the landing, outside of the front bedroom. As I got to the top of the stairs and turned to walk down the landing I froze as there was a tall man in black top hat and tails with a gold pocket watch on his right side. He looked at his watch and put it back in his pocket. He had a black, long sweeping down moustache, he touched the rim of his hat and tilted his head at me. My Mum shouted me as I was taking a long time and she needed the vest. I looked down the stairs and when I looked back he had gone. I ran down the stairs and told my Mum I couldn't get it because of the man.

Then in my 30's I had a feeling that he was with me again but I couldn't see him just the shadow of him but I knew it was him. I would love to know the meaning of these and who he is.

So I saw a little girl at the side of my bed last night and it took me down a rabbit hole of search for little girl beside bed and I stumbled across a few of the top hat man reporting. This logged my memory of seeing the top hat man. I've seen this top hat man several years ago. The descriptions are almost identical. He was very tall and had a top hat. I grabbed my cell phone and shined the screen light on him and it didn't go away. Then I quickly turned on the lamp and it disappeared.

Okay so, WOW! Your encounter is almost identical to mine.
I was about 6-8 years old and this happened at night in my parents home while they were still married (Divorced 2 years later)
One night I woke up in my bedroom, in my bed and it was complete darkness. The only light was coming from my window that had an outdoor street light outside of it. Anyway, I woke up and immediately at the foot of my bed a man with a dark cape and a dark top hat was standing there. His face was not there, just blackness. He looked like a magician. At that very moment he reached both his arms out in front of him and moved them up, and my bed started to rise. As a child this terrified me. I was frozen, couldn't move, couldn't scream. All I could do was just close my eyes and deny what I was seeing. At some point I fell back asleep. I remember this day like it happened yesterday and that was 35 years ago. My mother still lives in the same home and I've always felt a type of presence there throughout the years. My daughter who is now 22 years old has also seen shadow figures at my mothers house but nothing to this extent.

I have had visions in the past and they had all been put down to mental health. After researching this is seems strange. I saw the figure stood in the door way of my old house. As looked at him, he had a Victorian trench coat on with the tails and a Lincoln top hat again his chest as if he was waiting for something. He smiled and all I could notice was jagged teeth and a bald head.

I think I was 8 or 9 when I had this dream or nightmare as I call it I woke up screaming for my parents even tho my siblings were sleeping in the same room as me I seen a man tall wearing all black his jacket was long and his hat was black as well he was standing on the kitchen table but when my parents came running out their room he was gone they looked outside and calmed me down but recently I had this dream again and I'm 23 now but this man was watching me sleep I have no clue why but it scares the crap out of me

I have seen this man so many times as a child I was in a domestic home and one night I got into bed and he was stood there in the corner of my room he had a long trench coat on he was tall and very slim he also had longer fingers then normal. He use to come into my room but every night he would get closer and close and one night I was in bed I was about 9 I was watching a moving and he came up from under my television and stood up the light from the screen disappeared he walked towards me and touched my hair then after that I never saw him again. When he was stood there it wasn't for seconds it was for minutes. I am 21 now and I thought I was the only one so I researched him and found so many stories about him all over the world

I seen this same guy, first time ever. I am 24 years old. This morning around 5am 10/20/2017. I woke up, and I was laying towards the end of my bed and I seen this man criss crossed sitting with a tall hat, just sitting like he was meditating. It's like he was staring at me. It was like a shadow and I know he was there. I don't remember what I said but it was along the lines of leave I think. I was shocked because I knew I wasn't sleep. I prayed for a few seconds and went back to sleep.

My friend seen him a few years back he was in the living room I was in the dining room next thing I know the front door opened and thinking its my grandma I asked what was for dinner but no answer was given so I camed to believe it was the wind so I went to shut it out the corner of my eye I saw my friend his face was completely white he yelled at me ''do you not see him'' see who I asked ''that man'' he answered thinking nothing of it I said if youre a bad spirit you have no right to be in this home in the name of Jesus I order you to leave and be casted out he told me after I said that that the man had tipped his hat to the both of us me first for some reason and continued to walk downstairs my friend said. Recently my cousin had seen him aswell he was moving stuff in the living room the front door had opened and closed and than the man with the top hat looked at him and tipped his hat and continued to walk downstairs my guess is if he's not a demon or the devil it might be death himself but death will only show himself as someone is about to pass my belief but personally I have never seen him but I have seen the devil or a demon I don't really know which but being 14 and see something like that you'll never forget what something like that looks like especially as youre waking up to it being face to face not being able to move so scared as if it happened yesterday

I have had one encounter with a man in a black suit. I could not see his face because it was like a black void. I saw him one night in my room when I woke up to go to the bathroom and couldn't get out of the bed because I was paralyzed. All I could do was turn my head from side to side. I didn't speak, but I could tell he wanted me to go with him. I have often described him as not really scary, but definitely creepy. I see you did too.

Every time I tried to get up I was pushed back into my body by three monks at the foot of my bed. I could feel myself trying to sort of get out of my body, but I kept getting sucked back in by the monks who were mentally pushing me. My body never physically moved. This went on for a couple of hours. Finally I stopped looking at the man and a while later turned to check the clock and he was gone as well as the monks.

A couple of years after this happened, I had a NDE. I don't know if these two events are related, but I am interested in hearing what others have to say.

Wow! I've never encountered things like this but I've seen other people's posted stories about a man with a top hat. They all seem to have something to do with triggering animals. Weird... 😲

I thought I was the only one. I'm 20 now but once when I was 18 I saw this man. I remember it was before I had gotten my third dog Wolfie but after I had gotten Dominik, my second dog. I woke to Dominik barking and barking and when I looked over to what he was barking at there was a man there. He was tall and he had a top hat on. He was all black but I could tell he was wearing a black suit. Even though he had no features in his eyes I could still tell he was staring right at me. I tried to move my arms and my legs but I couldn't. I couldn't move my body at all, only my head. Dominik was at the very edge of my bed, near the man, he was barking but I could take tell he was a bit afraid as he would jump back. I finally had given up on moving when I would just watch the man, suddenly my eyes grew heavy and I just fell asleep while Dominik kept barking. Although I was scared when I first saw this man, I mean there was a strange man in the middle of my room but I could tell he didn't mean any harm. I never saw him again after that.

I'm so glad I came across your post. Several years ago, I saw a black shadowy male figure, which was the only reason at the time I concluded what I was seeing was a spirit. (My first experiences with the paranormal started when I was very young but did not intensify until many many years later). The man, was VERY tall, I had to guess about 6ft 5in or more, wearing all black. He wore what I could only describe to my family as an Abraham Lincoln kind of top hat, and black trench coat. If I had not of known better, I would have said the spirit was in fact, Abraham Lincoln! I immediately felt that this spirit was staring at me. He stood about 10 feet away from me, standing in my hallway of my home, while I sat on my couch watching television. At the time, I didn't know what to think. I was alone. The next day, I tried my best to explain this figure to my husband and my mother. I even drew them a picture of what I saw. I continued to see this figure for about a few months, off and on. (Not every day, but at least a couple times a month). I even asked my husband on a couple of occasions when I saw this figure briefly (he would appear and then disappear shortly afterward) if he could see it, and he told me he did not see it. For the longest time I didn't know if this figure was a person who I could have known, or if this figure was a symbolic type of spirit perhaps. At those times, I had convinced myself that I was feeling "dread" and that our home felt doom-like and dark, when he was around. However I can't qualify if those feelings were legitimate or parallel to him being present, but I did equate those feelings to his presence. I did not know why "he" was coming to me.
It wasn't until this past couple of weeks ago, that I thought about him again, (as I have not seen the man with the top hat for about 4 years) but I met a girl at Chapters Bookstore (who was about ½ my age) who was telling me about her first experience with seeing a spirit, and she described a man all in black wearing a black hat. I was bewildered that someone else had seen the same man! So, tonight I decided to google the Internet about this spirit, only to find out that this spirit is a very popular spirit! I had no idea! It gives me great validation about having seen this spirit, because I didn't know so many others have also seen him, to the point of describing him in the exact same manor as I had.
I'm in disbelief that others actually describe him in the same amount of detail, height, colour, style of hat, type of coat! It's uncanny.
Thank you for posting your experience. As a 42 year old police officer, I realize that it is very difficult to explain these kinds of experiences to the public (and be believed) as most will never believe, until perhaps it happens to them.

When I was about five or six years old my family and I lived in an older house. It was nice if not just a little worn in some places. At some point shortly after moving into the house I would see a shadow like man in the corner of my room late at night. All I could make out was that he was a tall man with a sort of top hat. It wasn't too big or anything but noticeable in the dark. Even though the moon shone into my room I still couldn't make out any details about him personally. I was at first scared by this figure in my room so I laid in bed staring at him unable to sleep. But after a while I came to realize he meant no harm to me. He didn't do anything but stand in the corner of my room every night. So over time I learned to just accept his presence and go to sleep. I never saw him after I was taken away by my parents by my lying grandmother. I did go back to the house when I was able to return to my parents but I don't recall seeing him there. I had been away for at least six months. I to this day never thought anyone else had ever seen him. But I then heard someone else mention this figure so I looked it up. The first description didn't really fit him because it described a man in a sort of fedora hat not a top hat and he had the presence of evil but the man I saw didn't really seem evil or attack me. I didn't tell anyone in my family until a few years ago, my mother didn't believe me because she claims she can sense spirits and such but she didn't ever sense anything in that house. Well I still say she is wrong because I know that man was there. Maybe he didn't want to be noticed by anyone else? I don't know. All I know is even though my mom never noticed him, I saw him, he was there watching me sleep. I can still remember so distinctly what it felt like to lay in bed staring at him knowing he was staring at me too.

It funny that this is mentioned. Iam extremely empathic and psychic to the point where I would envision people in my head whenever I sensed a presence. I went ghost hunting a few times with a friend of mine and we would always come back to this one old graveyard in putney vermont. One night like a week before christmas we stopped by this graveyard. We were getting cold and it was starting to snow so we set up a recorder on the cobblestone wall that surrounded the graveyard, and got in my car to keep warm. We waited about a half hour until it started snowing and we decided to get going. So we grabbed the recorder and listened to what we found. We heard shuffling of some walking by breathing and the sound of a stick tapping on the ground as it walked. What I didn't mention is that I visioned in my head a tall man with a derby hat on. Later I read about the top hat man and it blew my mind.

I saw this shadow man before when I was 17 I think it was. It was very late, I was in bed and I remember the power went off. And the only light was from the moon sorta beeming through my blinds. Though it wasn't very bright at all. The window was at the end of my bed and I remember looking up at it and saw a figure of a man standing in front of it. He was dark like a shadow but he was outlined by the moonlight. I didn't see any features or details of the clothes or his face just that he was tall and he was wearing a trench coat and he had a hat on. I wouldn't say it was a tall top hat like Abe Lincoln, he much more resembled Dick Tracy. He wasn't there very long. I don't know what he is or who he is but I've only seen him once after that. I've told my grandmother about it and she told me he has visited her all her life.

My sister and I both saw him one time. We were in our house alone, I was about 17 and she about 14. We were laying on the ground playing and wrestling over a ball as part of a game we were playing. In the room directly in front of us, which was a secondary living room, we had these gorgeous bay windows which illuminated the room quite nicely. It was the middle of a summers day. The sun was brightly exposing itself through the bay windows and casting its light on the carpet in this room. This is were my experience differs from so many of yours, as your was at night. As were playing out of know were this 7ft tall shadow appears in the room seemingly out of know where. I still get chills thinking about it. This shadow was 2 dimensional in form and didn't appear casted on a wall, but in the center of the room. It had a very tall top hat and was very tall and slender basically Abe Lincoln if he was a shadow. The shadow appeared but very differently then you all describe. As this shadow appeared from know were out of the right of the room and walked a crossed in the center of the room towards the bay windows. His shadowy arms swung back and forth and his legs step by step in a large gate. His face focused towards the Bay windows. Out of no where very creepily, he stopped directly infront of us in the center of the room, in mid walk. His arms were still fixed in the swinging walking motion as where his legs. By this I mean he didn't stop with both legs straight parellel to one another and arms by sides just standing. I mean that think of someone in the motion of walking just freezing mid walk. Next even more creepily, which I am getting chills just typing. His bay window direction fixed head, very slowly turned in our direction and peered at us. No facial features like a nose lips cheek bones or eyes, yet you could since where the eyes were and you could feel them piercing you and fixed on you. I have never felt the way I did when he looked at us. It wasn't as if he was looking at us but looking inside and through us. This lasted a second or 2. Then Just like that, faster than humanly possible he whipped his head towards the bay windows and sprinted straight out of them. We thankfully have not seen him again, and if we never do I will be more than ok with that. For those of you who have witnessed him you all will agree with me when I say that those who have not seen him do not know true black. The blackest thing on this earth looks light in comparison to this shadow.

My dad and I have experienced this man too. My dad is 57 now and he hasn't seen the Hat man in years. He said he started seeing the man at about 3 years old, the man would stand there staring at him with a mean look. When my dad got older the man would try to grab him and didn't stop until 5 in the morning. The man stopped coming when he was 17. I'm 18 now and had about the same experience as him, the Hat man torments children. He is known for traveling to child to child.

I used to see the top hat man every night for a while when I was about 2-3 years old. When we would be put to bed and my older brother fell asleep, this very tall figure with a black cloak and top hat would come out of the closet, come right up to me and sit in the bed right next to me. I know I was awake because I could hear the air condition unit in the window turning on and running. He would stare down at me with a completely black face with no features. He never touched or harmed me in any way. At first I was petrified and frozen in fear, but eventually I got used to him and would just expect him to come out and he did, night after night. I just recently started doing searches online and found that many people see this figure so it I was pretty shocked to find all these posts. We eventually moved to a different state and I didn't see him for a long time until I was about 10 years old. Playing hide and seek and I was in a closet hiding and a black hand reached out from the clothes and waved at me as if to remind me he was still around. I am 38 now and have not seen him since that day, but I have had several other experiences, I think I am sensitive to these things so they are attracted to me, I just haven't gone out of my way to make contact with them. Others have been with me during paranormal events which I just kind of shrug off while they are completely shocked. What I can say is that these things are real, but don't assume they are harmful. Some people can deal with things better than others, and I think the experience as a child made me a stronger person. If you don't make an issue out of them they will eventually leave you alone or at least learn that you are strong willed and they can't really harm you.

Therealangel7 I think this top hat man is just a traveler. He goes from one person to the next. I think he may be a lost soul and only looking for what he was unable to do when he was alive. Something as a similar request of "Unfinished business". Or he may be a guardian and those who have seen him were meant to see him. There are so many possibilities, but I for one never senses any negative energy. Just a calm shadow that seems to make his way around through people's eyes. He might not be out to harm you, if you don't feel overly scared or like he's going to harm you. It could be your guardian angel, presenting him/herself to you in a way you would understand, or a deceased family member watching over you. Not everything is "good" or "bad" but simply there. Good luck.

I have seen a Man with a Top Hat, in my "experiences" under "Waking Visions". In the middle of the night, I wake up for a bathroom break, then nearly every night, there are images/visions close to my face, sometimes 3/4 inches which can be alarming but not scary, especially when one had a large eye, like from a giant (higher enlightened being, I believe).
I do canvas paintings, and in one of them (I found "him" later, after photographing the finished work, I could see the shape of a man in a Top Hat. But I get lots of faces/animals in my paintings so wasn't surprised. I also had a grandfather who wore a Top Hat, so it could have been my ancestor just keeping an eye on me. Which spirits are very keen to do.
So he could be one of yours too.

If you look up shadow people they are seen in that way. One may have the top hat, trench coat, and be super tall. While another could just be a shadow, and can have glowing eyes. People have been wondering if they are pure evil, aleins, time travlers watching time, or even pure sprit who watches you sleep at the end of your bed. I see them all the time in the corner of my eye. Also it is said if they let you see them for a long period they are threating you and something bad will happen. But, that never happened to me.

hi, I saw a man with a hat once when I was 14 ish outside under a lamp post. Just staring at me. I ran to tell my friends to come look. But he had simply dissapeared. Anyways, he made me feel very uneasy and I can't remember if he was wearing a top hat but it was some type of hat. Anyways, The man you see may very well be your gaurdian angel. I had an instant like this once and when I sought guidance I was told it was my gaurdian angel and that my soul was one of the oldest you can have and that he had been with me since the beginning but it was time for him to leave me. He came to say goodbye. I never knew if I would be getting a new angel. I really have no idea. Anyways. Just an angle for you to look at... Tc 😁

This whole time I thought I was the only one who saw this man, I guess I was wrong. I feel more relieved that I was. McAmanda I will keep you updated on any "stories" that I have. Monie88 I am aware that you had a negative feeling and I am sorry for that experience. I hope things are better now. I have always sense things while growing up and I am only 17 years old. I never told my mother that I could see things until I was 10 since I thought it was normal. I only see children but, sometimes I do see adults or things that shouldn't be seen. I happen to draw them out when it's really powerful and dark. I kind of get into a trance and draw every detail on what they look like and I simply dislike it.

Its makes sense to me. I lost my mother in November of 2009 September of 2010 my ex husband asked for a divorce. I was waking up at that time for a while. But the negative feeling wasn't until he left

Last year around September I had a nasty separation with my ex husband. A month after I started to feel as if a negative presence was watching me sleep. I would wake up around 4:20am-4:30am I was scared to go in my children's room some nights because it felt as if someone or something was in there. When my twin boys came home after a visit with a relative. My little one started to wake up around the same time but he was having night mares of a man. I tried to ignore these feelings to reassure my boys everything was fine. Months went by and a bunch of bad things started to happen. I lost my job, behind on bills,& even friends. Months went by and I connected with a friend/crush he would stay the night. His night terrors got worse his insomnia began always on edge. Kitchen doors would open. Lights would be on. It got to the point we couldn't sleep in the room as much. I had an old friend one night watch my boys while I went out. When I got back she explained to me that the boys would not sleep unless the bathroom door was closed and the closet light on with the door shut because the man in the dark tall hat was after them. I do not allow my children to watch anything scary and hey have never any conversations about anything in this category. My mom would always tell me I had a gift and there were nights I could feel something so heavy and dark in my house Id cry. In my home was gloominess,sickness, anger, and every emotion negative. We finally moved from that place and since then my kids have never spoke or woken up with nightmares of the man in the dark tall hat. I'm worried and scared to this day.

My friend Lindsay I met a few years ago and myself have both seen the man in the top hat. Lindsay has seen him several times, I've only seen him twice playing in the woods as a child. Lindsay's mom met the man in the top hat right after she was born, then she says he's been with her her whole life, Lindsay is now 19 and I am 18. We both thought we were the only ones
