I have caught myself noticing this random ability/gift/curse more and more often. At first I would discount it as coincidence, or some strange synchronistic events aligned by the universe, but now I am suspecting it is a part of my own being.
What I'm talking about is the ability to smell images. Computer screens, magazines, photographs; not all the time, but often, when I see an image, I can smell what I'm seeing.
This is not as simple as seeing a picture of a banana and smelling bananas. This is more like seeing an image of a person, or an animal, or even a room in a house, and smelling a light (sometimes bold) fragrance of what that thing is, and not necessarily any smell that I am familiar with.
For example, most recently, today in fact, I saw the image of an alligator that had been killed and was being prepared by a taxidermist. I became aware that I was sensing the foul smell of swampish decay and death. Not just me imagining that it smelled bad, but actual sensory reaction in my skull.
This does not happen 100% of the time. This doesn't even happen 1% of the time, but it does happen often enough for me to recognize that this ability exists. Sometimes it's nice, sometimes it's disgusting.
I wish I could control it, or even understand it better. I suspected it may be a form of synesthesia, and have researched about that, but don't see a match for what I experience.
I guess I'm kind of curious if this is common or not.
